Blogmas Day Seventeen: Favorite Christmas Memories

dymond phillips • Dec 17, 2020
Wow for as long as I could remember, I’ve always been obsessed with the holiday season. I love being life hearing the music getting presents, but most of all I love watching holiday movies. Watching how many movies I was a kid, I would literally look forward to December just to watch ABC families 25 days of Christmas. I knew all the movies by heart because I would watch them over and over. Even as an adult, I literally watch holiday movies all month from Netflix, Hulu, Hallmark, and Amazon prime. Typically, I hate sappy corny movies, but when it comes to holiday movies I don’t care. Christmas time brings out my inner child and I absolutely love it.

I have so many holiday memories that remind me of my childhood. It’s so many Christmas traditions that I will definitely pass down when I have a baby. My family and I always give back during the holiday season. When I was younger, we passed out dinners with the church. Now, we pass out outerwear and clothes to the homeless on Christmas Eve. Giving back is something I will instill in my future children, the same way my family instilled it in me. Growing up, my mom always made Christmas time special. She would take me to see Christmas lights, and to get hot coco. As a kid, I loved helping my grandmother put up the Christmas tree and decorate the house. As soon as December first came around, I would play all of my Christmas CDs on my little radio. On Christmas Yves at midnight, my family would all get in the circle and we were all open up one gift from under the tree. One year I beg my mom to open up the rest of my gift, and after hearing me beg for about 10 minutes, she said yes. So I opened up all my presents and I was so excited. Until, the next morning when I woke up and realized I had opened all my gifts. I sat there while my mom and grandparents opened theirs. I was so mad and vowed never to do that again.

Every Christmas day, my family opens presents, eat dinner, laugh and go to the movies at night. Although I’m all grown up, and Christmases are not the same, I still love the holiday season. I love getting people the perfect gifts and seeing the smile on their face when they pull back the wrapping paper. I know we are in the middle of a global pandemic, and holidays are going to look a little different, but I challenge you remember the good times. While you do that, embrace the new normal. I find so much happiness by watching Christmas movies that I used to watch as a kid. Yesterday, I listened to the old Disney Christmas album, and it made me so happy. The little girl in me was able to come out and dance all around my room. Figure out ways to make yourself happy this holiday season. Whether it’s making Christmas cookies, watching old Christmas movies, or singing your favorite Christmas song, make your inner child happy today. Also, try to make some new Christmas traditions this year.
