The Biggest Entrepreneur Gift And Curse!

Right now, we are able to see everything that someone is doing via social media and the internet. It can be easy to see a business owner in your same field expanding and growing. It’s easy to feel as though you should be doing the same. The truth is, it’s better to focus on one thing at a time. Many people focus on the next thing, the next product, the next business, without mastering the one they currently have. Would you rather have one great product or five good products?

When Steve Jobs went back to Apple, after being gone for a few years, he said the product lines were so vast and significant that he couldn’t keep up with what they were. He said if he can’t keep up, how can the consumers. What he did was, got rid of about 70% of the product plans that were in the works. He knew that the bigger the lines, the harder to perfect the products.

The number one barrier to growth for early stage businesses, is lack of focus. As entrepreneurs, heck as humans, we try to do too many things and be everything to everybody. By doing so, we end up being nothing to nobody. As entrepreneurs our biggest strength and weakness, is that we love to pursue opportunities. We end up doing too many things at once. ESPECIALLY IN THE EARLY STAGES OF BUSINESS, FOCUS ON ONE THING. Having one great product is better than having several good products.

FOR EXAMPLE: Back in 2007, when Apple released their iPhone, they only had one phone. That one phone was better than any of other phones on the market. Other companies were releasing multiple phones at the same time, but Apple didn’t. The point is, build one great product; build one great business, before moving on to others.

Once you’ve built one great product and it’s successful, sustaining and profitable, you’ve then given yourself permission to go and do it again. The same goes for building a successful business, focus on one company first. Even if you’re in the service industry, focus on perfecting one craft before adding others another.

We live in a era where multiple streams of income is glorified, and that’s great. But how can you have multiple streams of income, without securing your main bag? You need a secure main stream of income FIRST! As a solo entrepreneur, you can’t do everything.

Make sure you always step back and look at the bigger picture. This is why, having vision and setting long term goals are important. When you have long term goals, you must set short term goals that align with them. That way, no matter what the next person is doing, you stay on track with what you want. When you don't have clear long term goals, it's easy to get side tracked and to think you need to do everything. Take a step back and look at everything you're doing. Does it align with your long term goals? Better yet, does it align with your why? If the answer is no, stop doing it! Stay in your lane and path that leads to what you want.
