If At First You Don't Succeed

Dymond Phillips • Feb 25, 2019
Happy Monday, we are only three weeks away from spring. Monday's are my favorite day of the week because it's a fresh start. Over the weekend I had a eureka moment, while at work. For those of you who don’t know I work at Nordstrom in the accessories division which includes handbags, sunglasses, jewelry, and accessories. While I was at work on Saturday, I was In the midst of fixing a pair of Tom Ford sunglasses, when I had a mini life lesson moment. If you don’t know, fixing sunglasses is a very tedious job and takes a lot of focus. I was stuck fixing the same pair of sunglasses for about thirty minutes because I couldn’t find the right screw to repair it. After going through over two dozen screws I decided I was going to just tell the customer we couldn’t fix it. I walked away, went to get some water and after about fifteen minutes something told me to try one more time. When I put the final screw in it fit like a glove and Wala it was fixed.

This story has a purpose. I’m telling you this to say, whatever you're doing, don’t give up. Once you’ve tried all that you can do walk away breathe and try again. You don’t know how close you are to success until you give it your all. Don’t quit, keep pushing and I know it sounds very cliché but I mean it. It was such a Wala moment for me because at one point I was so close to giving up on so much in my life, i.e school, Dymonds Diary, almost even myself, but it just re-focused me and geared me up to get back on track.

Isn't it crazy when we are looking for something that's lost and can't find it. Once we start doing something else it pops up out of nowhere. With life, you will get discouraged, and/or won't always get the results you want. Once you've exhausted all possible things in your power, you have to let go and let God. Don't just give up, this is the time to stop and do something to get your mind off of it. This is why you have to have outlets to clear your mind. For me, my outlet that clears my mind and makes me happy is going to the movies or going on a road trip. It doesn't have to be as big as a vacation, but you need to have mini things that make you happy. Maybe you need to take a hike or go take yourself out to eat. Maybe it's going to get a pedicure. It could even be cooking a new home cooked meal. Whatever that self-care is for you, do it. It's okay if you honestly don't know what small things make you happy, but you need to start doing things to discover what it is. If you don't know how to make yourself happy, you shouldn't be dating. Once you discover what self-care activities make you happy, you'll be more rejuvenated to do the work you need to do. When things get tough, don't quit! Just step back, breathe, do some self care and you'll be more refreshed and ready to tackle any tasks that comes your way.
