Learning To Love My Natural Hair Again, One Wash Day At A Time

I’m on a journey of loving the skin I’m in.

I talked about this a few weeks ago after my dermatologist visit and trying to clear up my skin. I also mentioned it in my post, The Hairstyle I Almost Let Fear Talk Me Out Of: From Damaged Curls to Rediscovering My Confidence, where I opened up about how damaged my hair became after wearing wigs and leaving my natural hair out in the front.

So now… we’re in a rebuilding season.

As my hair regrows, I’m learning to fall back in love with me. I had to really ask myself:

Do you love yourself without any enhancements? When you wake up in the morning, do you love the skin you’re in?

And if I’m being honest, that answer has been a journey.

I used to have long, thick hair that felt effortless. And while I still have beautiful hair, it’s just different now.

For years, I didn’t have to do much to it. It would just grow. I’ve been honey blonde for over eight years, but this past September we went the lightest I’ve ever been with added highlights. And while I love the color, it came with breakage.

So now, my hair routine isn’t optional, it’s necessary.

I try to use little to no heat, keep my hair moisturized at all times, and stay consistent. This color can dry my hair out quickly, so hydration is everything. I’ve also added vitamins into my routine to support hair growth from the inside out.

I’m finally in a place where I love my natural skin, and it’s only getting better. I can’t wait to feel that same confidence with my hair again.

I’ve been trying new styles like perm rods, ponytails, buns, and wash and gos. And no, this doesn’t mean you’ll never see me in wigs or braids again, because you absolutely will.

But what it does mean is that I’m prioritizing the health of my natural hair first.

One of the biggest adjustments has been washing my hair weekly.

I now wash my hair every 7–10 days, whether I go to my stylist or not. And for someone who used to go weeks, even months, without washing their hair, this is a shift.

It won’t always be this frequent, but right now, while I’m repairing breakage, it’s necessary.

So I wanted to bring you into what a typical wash day looks like for me.

My Wash Day Routine

I always start with a pre wash cleanse using a tea tree oil shampoo to remove buildup, oils, and any leftover product.

Then I go in with my main shampoo: Pattern Beauty Hydration Shampoo. I love this because it cleans my hair without stripping my color or drying it out. My hair actually feels hydrated after using it, which is rare.

For conditioner, I use Pattern Beauty Medium Conditioner, and it makes detangling so easy. It leaves my hair incredibly soft, and I definitely understand why it’s award winning. Both products are rich in oils, which my hair needs right now, especially since I’ve learned my hair loves jojoba oil. And the curl definition? So good.

On days when my hair needs extra moisture, I use Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Moisture & Shine Conditioner. It smells amazing, and I’ll leave it in for about 10 minutes to really let it soak in.

What I do after washing depends on how I plan to style my hair.

One thing that stays consistent is my Amika Hydro Leave-In Spray. I section my hair into four parts and spray each section before blow drying. Then I follow up with a heat protectant from La Belle Hair Care, and sometimes their hair mist as well.

After that, I go in with jojoba oil on my scalp and throughout my hair, especially if I’m doing braids, perm rods, or straightening it.

If I’m doing a wash and go, I only apply the oil to my scalp so I don’t weigh my curls down.

This routine has honestly changed my hair in the best way. My texture feels healthier, my curls are coming back to life, and with it being spring, my hair isn’t as dry as it was during the winter. I’ve also been drinking more water, and I can definitely tell the difference.

This healthy hair journey is exactly that, a journey.

As someone who used to never wash their own hair, I now prioritize my wash days so much more. Even when I go to my stylist, we do monthly steam treatments to restore moisture, especially with my color.

I’ve also been loving Pattern Beauty not just because it works, but because it aligns with what I’m trying to be more mindful about, using products that are hydrating, cruelty free, and better for me overall.

Because this journey isn’t just about my hair. It’s about how I show up for myself.

And if you’re in a season where your hair, or even your confidence, doesn’t look how it used to, just know you’re not alone.

You’re not starting over, you’re rebuilding.

With more intention.

With more care.

And with a deeper love for who you are, right now.

And that? That’s even better than where you started.
