Seeing Is Believing

"Creative visualization is the cognitive process of purposefully generating visual mental imagery.''

How do you expect to achieve something you can’t see? You need to see it, before you believe that you can have it. Last week, when I wrote about my reset, I got a lot of questions about how to visualize the person you want to be. It isn't easy. It will take time and focus. Spending time with yourself, meditating, praying, and reflecting, will help reveal to you the person that you want to be. Once you start to get an image, you should sit and ponder on it. After you realize the person you want to be, look at the person you are currently and take inventory. Write down what doesn’t match, and begin to change little by little. You don’t have to wait until you're where you want to be financially, to start to show up as the person you want to be. Don't let that go over your head. Changing small things within yourself, will bring you closer to your overall life goals.

When you're a kid, your imagination runs wild, but as you get older, it tends to fade. Put yourself back in that child like mindset, and let your mind wander. Spend time alone, off your phone. Go for a walk, a jog, out to eat, anywhere that you can allow your brain to think. After that, begin to journal everything, until you can fully visualize the person you want to be. What you think about, you bring about. While you’re visualizing the person of your dreams, don’t allow any fears or doubts to enter your mind. Visualize your life goals, and how your life will be once you achieve them. Some people do this with vision boards too. "Visualization helps our brain send a signal to our body to start behaving in a way consistent with the images in our head,'' NYC-based therapist Kimberly Hershenson, LMSW, tells Bustle. "It helps give us a clear picture of what we'd like to achieve and a vision that it is, in fact, possible."

Once you have a clear visualization in your head, it’s likely your body will follow suit to make it happen. Make sure to write everything down, the big, small, long and short term goals, literally everything. I sit and think about the woman I want to be every day. I schedule at least 10 minutes a day, to sit and let my mind just wander on the life I’m creating. When I’m in the shower, or driving alone, I speak out loud the affirmations of my life. I give myself permission to become the person I’ve always wanted to be. Change your wording, and act as if it’s already happened. Instead of saying, “if” use “when.”

Not only do I visualize, I create habits that help me become more of the woman I want to be. For example, I want to be healthier with my diet, so I have a habit of eating oatmeal and a apple every morning. When I think about the woman I'm becoming, I see her as well spoken and confident. Guess what habit I added into my everyday routine, reading. Knowledge is power. Reading builds your vocabulary, both written and verbal. Once you see your future self, you have to change things in your everyday life. Make sure you're ready for the things you're asking for.

Like I said, getting clear on the person you want to be, isn't easy, but it will change your whole life. Since realizing the life I want, and the woman I want to be, things have shifted in ways I couldn't have imagined. I have routines in place that help me stay on track, daily habits and so much more. I feel myself in a transitional period, growing and elevating daily. I've seen this quote all over the internet, "I'm Currently Creating The Woman I Want To Be Excuse Me While I Become Super Selfish With My Time And Energy.'' This is my current season of life! Do the work necessary to grow into the butterfly you always wanted to be. You got this!
