3 Ways To Do What You Say You're Going To Do

It's Important To Keep Your Others, But Crucial For Yourself

Let me tell you the secret to a successful life. It is very simple, but so many times we forget to do it. Are you ready? DO WHAT YOU SAY YOU’RE GOING TO DO! If you’re like me, you run from people who do not hold up to their word. One way to get cut off with me, is not doing what you said you’re going to do. My dad ingrained into my head that a man only has his word, and if he doesn’t do what he says, leave him alone. It’s crazy how I’m like that with others, but I don’t keep that same energy with myself. We’ve all done it, told ourselves that we were going to do something, but didn’t. I understand, that sometimes life happens and you are unable to, but I’m not talking about those times right now. Right now, I’m speaking specifically to the times when you told yourself you were going to do something, but you didn’t simply because of yourself. For example, maybe you said on Monday I’m going to go to the gym, and Monday when you woke up you didn’t feel like it, so you don’t go. Let me share my personal tribulation with you. The last five weeks I dedicated to just doing what I said I was going to do with fitness. I was tired of the excuses. I have been saying I wanted to get consistent with the gym for years, just to have a healthier lifestyle, and yet I kept dropping the ball. I’m currently five weeks consistent and doing a  31 Day gym challenge where I go to the gym everyday in March. I’ve only missed one day this month. This isn’t just for fitness, I’m trying to have a more consistent and disciplined life. The key to discipline is just doing what you said you were going to do.

One thing that has helped tremendously has been planning my day the night before. I love to write out my to do list and have a top three priority that need to get done that next day. I don’t like having a long to do list, because I never get everything done. I like to have my to do list with about six or less things on it. As I’m trying to be more consistent and disciplined with life, I learned that it’s crucial to have habits in place to make sure things get done. For example one habit I have is setting out my gym clothes the night before. That small habit really helps me go to the gym the next morning. Another thing that has helped, was understanding that everything isn’t time sensitive. I used to tell myself that I was going to go to the gym every morning at 6 AM. In days that I would oversleep, I wouldn’t go to the gym at all. Don’t get me wrong, there are some mornings that I do go at 6 AM, but every day I can’t make it at that time. The trick is not to give up if you don’t make it to the at the “perfect” time. Get them done when you can. Because I map out my day the night before I know how my time structure of my day is, which helps me decide when I’m going to do the things I said I was going to do.

I saw a post that said “Demand consistency from yourself before you demand it from others.” That post spoke volumes to me, because I hold everyone around me at such high standards, but yet I was allowing myself to drop the ball. My trainer says, “Show up for yourself everyday.” Doing what you say you’re going to do is how you can do that. When you’re an entrepreneur, nobody’s going to check in see if you’re really doing what you said you were going to do. You don’t always have to clock in and out of a job. It is crucial to really have discipline when you have a business. Even if you have a 9-to-5 or a business on the side, having discipline will take you further because you will structure your time to get things done. One thing I’m learning in the corporate world is, there won’t always be someone over your shoulder making sure you’re working, but the expectation is that you’re getting the job done.

So here’s what I want you to do. Go back and look at your plan for 2022. If you didn’t create a plan or goals, go create some. Once you have that list of goals that you set for the year, create a plan to help you achieve them. I understand that you might have larger goals that take time, but you have to break down them into small pieces. Think of it like a puzzle the small pieces of doing what you said you were going to do is what creates the big picture. Anything is possible. Whatever your wants and dreams are, you can and will achieve them. But I understand that no one is stopping you, you are your biggest enemy. So when you wonder why you’re not going to that next level, look in the mirror and see if you have been really doing the things you said you were going to do. It’s still two weeks left in March, it’s time to start showing up for yourself. Daylight savings time has us having more sunlight which is good, for getting things done. Spring is right around the corner, and before you know it we will be walking into second quarter of the year. Once you start creating that discipline muscle, you will be unstoppable. How you do one thing is how you do everything. Once you start keeping your word to yourself with one thing, you’ll do the same in every aspect of life. Stop making excuses and trying to find the shortcut. The secret is doing what you said you were going to do. Create a plan and stick to that it.
