Support People That Look Like You

When I saw that the fashion icon, Kahlana Barfield Brown, had a collaboration with Target, I was so excited. Kahlana is a fashion staple who has been killing the industry for years. She is extremely tenacious, disciplined, ambitious, and overall a good spirit. I hope one day to connect with her face to face, but for now I will admire her from a far. If you know me, you know that Target is definitely one of my favorite stores. I’m there at least four times a week. Words can’t explain how happy I was to see my two favs, Target and Kahlana, collaborate. Target launched their Future Collective Campaign where they are going to be featuring different influencers of the fashion industry, to bring their style to target. The goal is to, “Capture each influencer’s unique style and personality and bring it straight to our fashion-conscious guests. Each influencer’s collection will share a new style story and aesthetic, providing on-trend options — all at a value you’ll only find at Target.” Kahlana’s collection is the first of this new program. How amazing is it that a brown skinned, black woman was the first?!

If you don’t know, I graduated from Clark Atlanta University, with a major in Fashion Merchandise and a minor in Journalism. Back in 2017, while I was there, I was trying to narrow down what I wanted to do. I started researching different people in the fashion world, who were journalist. As I was looking at different people, one person came across my feed. Kahlana Barfield. She instantly caught my eye, not only does she have an amazing style and is gorgeous, but she had a story that was similar to mine. At the time, there weren’t many brown skinned women in the fashion industry who were editors, but she was. On top of that, she was an HBCU grad, from Howard University. After I followed her on Instagram, I became obsessed and started reading her work and watching her interviews. She started out as an intern at Instyle Magazine, for a year. After the internship ended, and she was unable to get a job in New York, she packed up her bags and moved to Seattle. She was home less than a week, and Instyle called her back for a job position. Throughout her career at the magazine, she took on several key positions, including Beauty Director, and fulfilled duties that ranged from writing in-depth features to reporting live from the red carpet. She's now a leading fashion and beauty expert who inspires a new generation of women to embrace beauty from within. She’s been on countless talk shows, red carpet events and more. Two years ago, Kahlana quit Instyle to work for herself full time with consulting and collaborating with brands.

I am obsessed with Kahlana for multiple reasons. When she announced her collaboration with Target, I knew I would support her. I ordered every piece I could get my hands on, because it sold out so quickly. I’m an avid Target shopper for clothing, so I knew the quality would be there. Kahlana has amazing style, so you know the collection is hot! This is just one reason why I truly love Target, because they support black creatives. I ordered sixteen pieces from this collection, and honestly wish I can get my hands on more. It’s a fall collection, that has a great range in sizes from XS-4X. Today, I want to share with you Five Outfits I Put Together With My Kahlana x Target Collab Pieces. I could have done so many more, but I wanted to keep this short and sweet.

1. A Mini Skirt & A Turtleneck Sweater

I honestly love this look. The skirt is a asymmetrical a-line skirt. I love wearing turtlenecks in the fall and winter, they just are so cozy and chic. I was a little nervous when I saw that this was cropped, but paired with this high waisted faux leather skirt was everything. The skirt also comes in a denim material. FYI, it's super short, I don’t mind it, but if you do, try pairing it with some tights. Of course I had to throw on some over the knee boots with this look. If you know me, you know this is my signature fall style: some shorts or a short skirt, and some thigh highs. I sized up in the sweater so give me a little bit more room.

2. A T-Shirt Dress & Oversized Denim Jacket

I’m so mad the this collection came out at the end of September. This would have been my summer stable. I love t-shirt dresses because they’re so easy and comfy, but still cute. They can be worn with sneakers, heels, or boots. This t-shirt dress also has a tie up detail around the neck. I paired it with her oversized denim jacket. I’m going to be wearing this denim jacket all fall. Everybody needs an oversized denim jacket, but what I love about this one is the unique asymmetrical cut.

3. A Utility Denim A-Line Dress

I love anything that is utility style, whether it’s a jumpsuit, dress or skirt. I love this because it’s so easy, but looks so put together. I bought this in both styles: the brown denim leopard print and the blue acid wash denim. I paired the brown one with a thigh high boot and the blue one with a black bootie. You could even pair this with a sneaker for a casual look. The thing I love most about this dress is the big sleeves, they add a extra pop to this button up dress.

4. A Sweater Dress & Trench Coat

Can it honestly be fall without a plaid overcoat? When I saw this jacket, I knew I had to add it to my cart immediately. I would have never thought I needed a blue brown and tan coat, but I’ve already worn this three times. She also has a blazer with similar colors but a different pattern, that I also bought. One thing I’m going to do in the fall, is wear a sweater dress. This sweater dress is comfortable and stretchy, yet so cute. I love that it’s not skin tight. It has a stripe on the arm and buttons on the side bottom. It is an A-line style so it has a little bit of a peekaboo affect. I was obsessed with this ribbed dress, so I purchased it in both black and blue.

5. A Pleated Skirt & V-Neck Cropped Blouse

When I first added these pieces to my cart, I had zero intentions on wearing them together. As I was playing around with them, I realized they actually would be nice together. So far this fall has had many warmer days. This is perfect for a warm fall day. This pleated skirt is super airy and light. I love the length on it because you can wear it to the office, brunch or even a night out. My favorite part about this outfit is the top. It’s a cropped collared blouse with small cut outs at the sides. This would be so cute with jeans or even a fitted skirt.

There are so many great pieces with this collection and I wish I could go share them all. If you liked this post and want to see the rest of the items I purchased, please let me know in the comments. It’s so important that when large companies invest and collaborate with black creatives you support, because that way it shows them that we need more! If you missed these drops in your size, it’s not too late. Kahlana dropped another KBBxTarget yesterday, Sunday October 16th, on Target.com and select Target stores. This new collection is completely different so you know I added more to my cart.
