Done Is Better Than Perfect

Waiting on perfection will kill your productivity.

Being done is better than perfect, because being perfect will never get done. Perfection is ultimately procrastination. According to Webster, perfect means, "Being entirely without fault or defect. Flawless.'' So many times we fear doing or launching something, because things aren't exactly how we want them to be. We fear stepping out on faith, because things aren't flawless. That is one of the biggest forms of procrastination, because things will never be perfect. Stop letting perfection be the thing holding you back. The problem with perfectionism is, it stops you from accomplishing many things that you have the ability to achieve. It prevents you from sharing with the world your ideas, your work and your craft, so you never benefit from the feedback necessary to get better; this means the world will not benefit from the amazing things you are capable of doing. Many of us say things like, if I can't do it perfectly, I won't do it at all. We tend to try to perfect all the wrong things for our business, when what matters is how valuable it is. The way to get good is by starting. People are afraid to fail. Failure helps you get better because you see what doesn't work. People use being a perfectionist, as an excuse not to get things done.

This is not only for business owners, this is even in everyday life. Struggling to make decisions because you want them to be perfect, will hold you back. For example, over the weekend I threw my aunt a dinner party. This was my second year throwing her party, and I wanted this year to be better than last year. I wanted everything to be perfect. I started planning this party, back in August, but I didn’t book anything, until five days before. I almost couldn’t get a cake, and I almost couldn’t reserve the restaurant that I wanted. All because I was waiting on perfect. Wanting things to be perfect will hinder you from making decisions. Once I realized her birthday was a week away, ready or not, I had to make a decision. By that time, the place I wanted to have it at, was booked. So I had to find a back up plan. On top of that, I already had a great baker, but I didn’t know the design I wanted. All I knew is that I wanted it to be perfect. By the time I had made a decision for the cake, the designer was already booked. By the grace of God she had a cancellation, and was able to squeeze me in. I almost let wanting things to be perfect stop me from having the dinner party all together.

When you want things to be perfect you second-guess a lot of stuff. Successful people are very decisive, and they make decisions quickly. Once you begin to overthink things, it slows down the process. You won’t have the perfect website, the perfect inventory, the perfect logo, the perfect anything until you start. Once you start, you'll see what needs to be fixed, and you'll keep getting better. Stop letting perfection kill your productivity. It will never be the perfect time. If you’re waiting on perfect, you might as well just say forget it. Don’t wait for the perfect moment, take a moment and make it perfect.

Tomorrow is October first, which is the final quarter of the year. It's only three months left in 2020. It's time to give it all you got. No more fear, stop holding back.
