Dress For Success

Right now, we are in a awkward time. Some people are going to work everyday, while others are working from home. Some people are working on their own businesses, and others are unemployed searching for new opportunities. Wherever you fall, you need to start each morning by getting dressed.

When you don’t have plans to leave the comfort of your own home, your normal routine to groom yourself easily falls to the wayside! When the pandemic first started, that was me.  I was waking up and staying in my pajamas until about 6pm. I only wore loungewear and pajamas, for about two months. Back in May, I decided enough was enough. The morning routine I was used to, was gone. It was time to create a new one. This new one started by me waking up and getting in the shower. After I showered, I began to put on real clothes. It could be jeans and a t-shirt or a dress, as long as it wasn't pajamas. Once I started to differentiate my sleep and work clothes, I was able to focus more. You might not think it, but being in pajamas all day can kill your productivity. But what does putting on clothes really do?

1. It helps your mood. We all wake up on the wrong side of the bed, sometimes. Maybe, the weather outside is rainy and gloomy. That doesn't mean you have to be in an oversized old tee and some pajama pants. Put on some bright colors, it'll brighten up your day. How we feel about ourselves on the outside, directly affects how we feel on the inside. When you look good, you feel good. When I feel pretty, I'm able to accomplish more work. It's a form of self care when you get dressed. Take care of yourself, even if you're staying in.

2. It changes your mindset. When I start my morning by getting dressed, I'm more likely to sit at my desk, rather than my bed or couch. Getting dressed at the start of the morning, turns your brain on. My mindset is switched from lounging to work. It helps me prepare for the day. You never know if you'll have to run to the store or if somebody is coming by. Stay ready so you don't have to get ready. The same is for when I change at night, into my pajamas. It lets my mind know that I'm winding down and shutting off from the day.

3. It keeps the days from running together. It helps establish a patter or routine in your life. Life is all about routines. Our routines have all been shaken up. Getting dressed everyday gives some type of normalcy to our lives. Things are so uncertain, we all need something to keep us sane. Something as little as getting dressed every morning, can provide structure.

This is not only for adults. Parents get your kids dressed for zoom class. Kids who get dressed for zoom class will be more attentive. It will set the tone that even though they're at home, it is still school. Kids who are in pajamas for virtual learning, are more likely to log on, in bed. Create a morning routine for your child, it is crucial.

I'm not saying, never wear pajamas. It's a time and a place for everything. Maybe have a lazy Saturday, where you watch cartons and eat cereal in your pjs. On days when you have work to do, start your morning by getting dressed. It get's your day started, on a good note. Who doesn't love a hot shower, first thing in the morning? It'll wake you up! Try starting every morning with showering and getting dressed, and watch how your productivity increases!
