There's So Many Lessons We Can Learn From This Extraordinary Man

Every year, the world pauses to honor the life of the incredible Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Although we all know this is not his actual birthday, on January 18th, we stop and acknowledge him for all the greatness that he has done. He was an activist, minister, humanitarian, and leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Thanks to him, we now have made large strides towards equality for all people. Thankfully now, we still have access to all his incredible speeches. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has made an impact on everyone’s life. Thanks to him, we now have opportunities that we would have never had without him. He had a dream that was bigger than him, and actively worked towards it. He faced many challenges and adversities, but he was resilient. Today, I wanted to show my gratitude by taking time and discussing five lessons learned by Dr. King.

1. Have Unwavering Faith
"Faith is taking the first step even when you can't see the whole staircase." -Martin Luther King Jr,
Dr. King had so many problems, but rather than worry,  he always prayed. He had a clear vision, and even through adversities, he kept his faith. He taught us to never stop believing! Dr. King always put God first. Whenever he was facing trouble, he looked to God. By keeping God the head of your life, you will have peace. Nobody saw his dream, but he had faith that it would come true.

2. Be Resilient
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
Things will not always go your way. You have to be willing to keep moving forward, no matter what happens. On the road to following your dreams, you’ll get knocked down thousands of times. It’s ok to slow down, but you can’t give up. You can’t be defeated. You have to keep going. Do it scared, do it broke, no matter what do it.

3. Love Out The Hate
“I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
God tells us to love thy neighbor, and Dr. King truly did that everyday. He loved people who hated him. Even after being beaten and spat on, he still chose to love. It’s so hard to not match people’s hate with hate, but it’s better to love the hate out. The same way God loves us, he expects us to love others, no matter what. Choosing to love is always right, although it may be difficult.

4. Fear Is Inevitable
“Courage is the power of the mind to overcome fear.” - Martin Luther King Jr.
So many times, we think we will wait until the fear is gone to go after what we want. The truth is, fear will always be there. Courage will come, once you do it anyway. You may think Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was fearless, but he had fears too. The only difference was, he decided to push through anyways.

5. Create The Life You Want
“A productive and happy life is not something you find; it is something you make.” - Martin Luther King Jr
We don’t just wake up one day and have the life we dreamed of. It takes work each and every day to build the life you want. The things you do today will affect your tomorrow. Be intentional with the life you live now.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an incredible man. He was so ahead of his time. He prophesied the world as it is now. There’s so many things that you can learn from his life and legacy. If you have some time, study some of his speeches and work that he did. I promise you, you won’t be disappointed.

“If you can’t be a sun, be a star. For it isn’t by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
