Five Things I Learned This Summer

Dymond Phillips • Aug 08, 2018
As you know I moved to Miami for three months for an amazing internship at Nordstrom. While I was doing that this summer, I was also taking online classes and working as a server at Chili's. I was in a new city with a bunch of responsibilities which was new for me. Moving for college is completely different than moving as an adult. In college, everybody is new and as an adult you are truly alone. I was stretched more than ever and it actually taught me many things I will never forget.

1. I Have More Time Than I Thought I Did
Let me explain. Before this summer, when I was just working my part time job, going to school, and running my business I thought I was so booked and busy. I made so many excuses on why I didn't get things done because to me I was booked. Not to mention I was only in classes from 10-3 then working from like 5pm-11pm plus I was off Mondays-Tuesdays. To me, that was extremely busy. This summer I was forcing myself to maximize my time by getting up early, staying up late and using my lunch breaks to the best of my abilities. I was able to handle it so now I have no excuse!

2. The World Is Diverse
I travel a lot and meet many different people but I've never had to build relationships with different kinds of people as an adult. By living in Atlanta, and going to an HBCU I've been only interacting with mainly African Americans. My move to Miami opened me up to talking to all walks of life. Miami is a tourist place so I was able to connect with people from around the globe. It taught me that everybody is different and not to judge a book by its cover.
3. I Can Get Dressed More
Throughout my college career I've mainly been super casual when going to class. I'm quick to throw on some leggings and a hoodie or t-shirt. I rarely got dressed unless it was for a presentation. By working at Nordstrom I was forced to get dressed everyday. I also was wearing heels at least three-four days out the week and that's different for me because I'm used to only wearing heels to go out. By dressing more professional people start to look at you differently. By me getting dressed more, when I was at work I was able to network which brought more readers to the site. It actual didn't take as long as I thought it would to put together cute outfits.

4. You Never Stop Learning
Over my life I've worked retail many times. Another thing I've learned this summer is each retailer is different. You have to continue to learn in life with whatever that is. Every morning I listened to podcasts to help my business. Once I got to work I would talk to the best employees and learn their techniques. I educated myself on the different career paths I wanted and learned what I needed to get there. Never stop learning and always be open to feedback it's the only way you get better.

5. NEVER STOP TRUSTING GOD
This one is major!! Before I moved to Miami I spoke it into existence and trusted that God was going to work with me to get me there. When I was offered the internship but had no idea where I was going to stay for three months I accepted it and trusted that God would open a door and he did. When I didn't know if I was going to be able to handle working two jobs, taking four classes and maintaining my blog God gave me the drive I didn't know I had. When I was nervous when my family left God gave me comfort. moral of the story no matter what you do in life continue to trust God and seek him for anything. Trust his word and what he said he would do. This summer was a lot of work but it helped mold me more into the woman I want to be.
