3 Reasons It's Important To Spend Time Outdoors

Do you remember how fun summers were back when we were children? I don’t know about you, but I would get up early and spend a large bulk of my day being outside. It’s crazy how I would be outside from sun up to sun down. On days when I didn’t want to go out, I remember adults telling me to turn off my TV and go outside to play. At first I would be annoyed, but in the end, I always had such a great time playing outdoors. Why don’t we push ourselves as adults to go outside?

The only time I hear people wanting to be outdoors as adults, is when they are at the beach or the pool. Getting outside in your neighborhood, a park, a trail, your porch or even backyard is just as important as sitting by the pool. Over the weekend, I sat outside, with my dog, Dior. She loves to sun bathe in our backyard, and even on the porch. Sunday morning, I decided to drink my coffee on the porch with her. Being outside for that hour, set me up for a great day. Being in the sun gave me a boost of energy that I didn’t know I needed. I ended up going back outside later that evening, with my book. It was something about seeing the trees and hearing the outside life that gave me peace. Don’t get me wrong, I used to hate outside, because I hate all the bugs. I can’t describe the feeling that comes from sitting outside. I love when the wind blows in my face, while the sun shines on me.

If I’m being honest, I’ve been a little anxious and stressed, just with day-to-day life and everything I have going on. When I was outside, my mind wasn’t all over the place and I was able to be present. If you work from home, or spend a lot of time indoors, I suggest you go outside for 20 minutes, and watch how well you concentrate when you come back in. Another great thing that came from me being outside was that I slept better that night. I normally get decent sleep, but I got some of my best sleep on Sunday night and I know that came from me being outside. Think about it, when kids spend their day outside, they get better sleep? It’s a direct coordination.

Being outside is so important for your mental and physical being. Why do you think kids have recess outside? Time outside is not only great for kids, but adults too. One of the greatest things that came from me being outside, was the gratitude it gave me. As I was looking at all the beautiful things God created, I couldn’t do anything but give thanks. Put your mind at ease and spend some time outside today. I personally, had to add it to my every day routine, even if it’s only 10 minutes. It’s so many things going on in the world. We even have phones that are constantly showing us things. Stepping outside will allow you to disconnect from the virtual world, and connect you with your environment.

It’s extremely therapeutic just being outdoors. Don’t believe me? Get outside and see!
