Give Onto Others

Luke 6:38: "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

Christmas Eve was my families second year giving back to the Metro Detroit area. My nana came up with this idea to pass out coats, hats, gloves and blankets to the homeless in Downtown Detroit. We started asking for donations a few months ago and so many people participated. First, let me say thank you to everybody who donated items and even donated money, it was greatly appreciated. A special thank you to my family and friends who showed up and donated their time. Sometimes, you have to check yourself! The days leading up to the give back day, I was not in the mood. I was so wrapped up in everything I had going on. I was so self absorbed in my own issues, that I didn't think about people who have it worse than me. Truth is, that is one my greatest challenges. Caring for others is something I do a lot, but also struggle with doing. I really want to work on being more caring, because the world doesn't revolve around me.

Anywho, in the beginning I was super excited for it, but, the days leading up I just fell out of it. I didn't want to do the work my family needed from me because I was too busy "kicking it." That's unacceptable, because in the blink of an eye, things can switch and I can be in their shoes. Thankfully, my nana and mommy stepped up and picked up my slack. The morning of, I pulled my head out of my own bubble and snapped out of it. We all met, back to back, and set up shop in the back of my dads truck. My friend Bree and I walked up and down the street mobliy passing things out, while my family was stationed at the truck. Everybody was able to help, even the kids were passing out stuff. Giving back is something my family takes very seriously and it's something I love to do.

While we were out there, people looked different ways. You couldn't tell who was homeless and who wasn't. It got me thinking, you can't judge people based upon looks because you never know. Anything can happen and shift your life. You want to make sure you're giving back not just because it's the right thing to do. Do it because God asks us to. God blesses me so much that I want to be like him and give unto his people. You don't have to give back like I do, find ways to give back in your own way. Look for ways to help your community. There's a special feeling that you get when you give back. That's something I want to do more of in this new decade.

Here's a short video of how our annual give back went.
