Stop Holding Yourself Back

Dymond Phillips • Jan 13, 2020

The holiday season is over, but yet I still struggled to get back to it!

Am I the only one who struggles with getting back to work after a long period off? I don't know why, but getting back to my normal schedule after Christmas and NYE is the hardest for me. I'm staying up late, waking up even later, going through each day with no sense of schedule or direction. Before Christmas, I was waking up before 7am, working out, reading, and going to Starbucks to write posts daily. I allowed myself to go out, stay up late, and not do any website work for the sake of holidays, but geez. I had to ask myself, how long is this holiday hiatus going to last?

After three weeks of doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING productive, I decided to get back to it. I've been in the gym consistently for about a week and it feels amazing. I work out to tone up and because I love how I feel after a workout. I'm most productive on days I go to the gym. I'm also back waking up earlier, not quite where I want to be yet, but progress has been made. For the last THREE weeks, I was sleep until 10/11am, now I'm waking up around 8/9am. Hopefully by next week, my body will be back waking up even earlier. I found a new Starbucks, that I've been obsessed with going to. Since going to my new Starbucks, I've gotten so much work done.

Over my three week break, I missed a couple of campaigns because I was lazy and struggling to find my motivation. It's crazy because I wrote a post previously about what to do when motivation fades. (click here to read) After reading that post, I remembered that motivation means NOTHING. I had to create new habits to get me back on track. I came up with three new habits and requirements to get me to actually do the habits. Habit one: Waking up early, would require me to go to sleep earlier. Habit two: Getting back to writing blog posts, would require me spending time in places that I work best (i.e Starbucks.) Habit Three: saving money, would require me to stop going out every night wasting money. Once I did this, I started to actually implement the habits into my daily routines slowly but surely. Before you knew it, I was back into the swing of things. Moral of the story, do it when you want to and DO IT WHEN YOU DON'T WANT TO. Having daily habits will help you stay productive even when motivation fades.

I say all this to say, get out your own way. That is one of my focuses for 2020. I had to learn that that MY procrastination, MY ego, the knowledge I neglect, the negative behavior I nurture, and the unhealthy foods I consume are what's holding me back. OVER ALL, I'm the only person in the way of making my dreams a reality. Accepting the fact that I'm the biggest downfall when it comes to my success is a hard pill to swallow. But the beauty in it is, it can all be changed. Once you realize it, make the changes to get out your own way. Stop holding yourself back from becoming the person you want to be. It's a new decade, don't let anyone hold you back from greatness, not even yourself! Have a great week!
