How to Transition Your Winter Wardrobe Into Spring

Simple Ways to Style Sweaters, Jackets, and Winter Staples for Unpredictable Spring Weather

Last week I shared all the winter pieces I’ve been loving lately, and almost overnight the weather in Atlanta decided it was spring. The temperatures jumped into the 70s and suddenly my heavy coats felt unnecessary.

Spring is definitely on the horizon. Daylight saving time is this Sunday, the sun is setting later, and those warmer days are finally here. But if you live somewhere like Atlanta, you know we still have cooler mornings and random chilly evenings ahead.

So while it may feel tempting to pack away every sweater you own, it’s actually not quite time yet.

The first 78 degree day we had, I’ll be honest, I stood in my closet confused. It felt warm, but not quite summer warm. After a few days of trial and error, I started figuring out how to transition my winter pieces into spring without freezing in the morning or overheating by the afternoon.

70 Degrees in March Is Not the Same as 70 Degrees in June

When you see 70+ degrees on the forecast, it’s easy to assume it’s time for shorts and sandals.

But 70 degrees in March and 70 degrees in June are completely different.

Spring temperatures still come with a breeze. It can feel cooler in the shade, and sometimes the sun disappears behind clouds and suddenly you’re wishing you brought a layer.

So before you run to pull out all your summer pieces, remember that this is transitional weather. The key is mixing pieces from both seasons.

Mixing Winter Pieces With Spring Staples

Instead of putting all my winter clothes away, I like to slowly transition them into spring.

That usually means:

• Removing the heavy outerwear

• Wearing lighter layers

• Mixing winter textures with spring pieces

One of my favorite combinations right now is distressed jeans with a sweater and either sneakers, booties, or mules. I don’t usually wear distressed denim during the colder months because I hate being cold, so spring is when I start bringing them back into my outfits.

It’s the perfect mix of cozy and breathable.

Cardigans Become My Best Friend

Another easy way I transition my winter wardrobe is by swapping out what I wear underneath my sweaters and cardigans.

In the winter, I usually wear them over:

• Long sleeves

• Turtlenecks

• Layered tops

But once spring starts creeping in, I switch those out for tank tops or short sleeve tees.

This way I can still wear my thicker sweaters or cardigans without feeling overheated. And if the temperature drops in the evening, I already have a layer ready to go. Plus, if it gets too warm, I can always drape the cardigan over my shoulders.

Bringing Out Lighter Bottoms

Spring is when I start bringing out my lighter colored trousers and linen or satin pants. These pieces feel lighter and more breathable, but they still give you some coverage for cooler days.

I love pairing them with:

• Sleeveless tops

• Lightweight jackets

• Utility jackets

Sometimes I’ll even still wear them with booties, which gives that perfect “not too hot, not too cold” balance.

Dresses With Boots Will Always Be a Staple

One outfit combination I love during transitional seasons is dresses with boots.

Whether it’s a floral dress or a simple black dress, pairing it with a bootie lets your legs breathe while still keeping your outfit grounded for cooler temperatures.

Sometimes if I’m running a quick errand I might throw on a slide sandal, but for the most part I don’t really start wearing my toes out until the end of March or beginning of April. I know some people wear sandals year round, but I personally wait a little longer.

The Best Shoes for Transitional Weather

Spring is also when I wear the most variety of shoes.

Even though I’m not a huge sneaker person, this is when I reach for them the most. Sneakers, mules, loafers, and ballet flats are perfect during this time because they show a little bit of your foot without committing to a full sandal.

And of course, this is still prime time for a good bootie.

Don’t Pack Away Your Jackets Just Yet

Even though the weather is warming up, I still keep a few jackets in rotation.

You never really know what the temperature will feel like inside restaurants, stores, or offices. This is the perfect time for utility jackets, lightweight trench coats, sweaters and throw on jackets

They add style to an outfit while still keeping you comfortable.

Transitional Fashion Is All About Balance

If you’ve felt confused about what to wear lately, trust me, you’re not the only one.

One of my favorite things about spring and fall fashion is that almost anything goes. I went walking with my dog the other day and saw people wearing everything from shorts to sweatsuits to full winter boots. And honestly? No one cared.

That’s the beauty of transitional dressing. It’s a little bit of trial and error until you find what works for you.

So instead of rushing to buy a whole new spring wardrobe, try mixing the pieces you already own. You might be surprised at how many outfits you can create just by peeling back the layers one piece at a time.

As for me, I’m slowly getting my closet ready for spring, one outfit at a time.
